News has reached the pages of Happy Doggy News, as we bid farewell to Bobi, the world’s oldest dog ever, as confirmed by Guinness World Records. Bobi’s incredible journey spanned 31 years and 165 days, a life filled with love alongside his devoted owner, Leonel Costa, and his family in the picturesque Portuguese village of Conqueiros. On the 20th of October, Bobi peacefully passed away in an animal hospital.
Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who had the privilege of meeting Bobi several times, shared the news on Facebook, saying, “Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings.” Bobi’s legacy goes far beyond his record-breaking age, as he leaves behind cherished memories and valuable life lessons for those who loved him.
Bobi’s journey to becoming a record holder started when he was officially recognized by Guinness World Records on February 2, 2023, as the world’s oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever. His birth date was confirmed way back in 1992 by the Serviço Medico-Veterinário do Município de Leiria, the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria. Additionally, SIAC, a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government and managed by the SNMV (Sindicato Nacional dos Médicos Veterinários; National Union of Veterinarians), verified his remarkable age.
Bobi’s story takes a heartwarming turn as he wasn’t destined for such a long and fulfilling life. He was part of a litter of four puppies, but due to his family’s limitations with other animals, his father made the tough decision not to keep them. Yet, fate had other plans. Bobi was accidentally left behind, hidden amidst a pile of wood in the building where he was born, and remained undiscovered by Leonel’s parents.
It was Leonel and his brothers who found Bobi, and they made the remarkable choice to keep the puppy a secret until it was too late to give him away. Bobi seamlessly integrated into the Costa family and became a beloved member. Despite the initial resistance and punishment from their parents, Leonel reflects that their decision to keep Bobi was undoubtedly worthwhile.
Bobi’s peaceful and free-roaming life in the embracing arms of nature contributed to his record-breaking age. He lived without being tied up, chained, or leashed, and he shared the company of his feline friends as he aged, earning him the reputation of a “very sociable” dog, according to Leonel.
Additionally, Bobi’s diet, exclusively comprising human food, is thought to have played a vital role in his longevity. “What we ate, they ate too,” Leonel fondly recalls, emphasizing that he would soak Bobi’s meals in water to ensure the seasonings were removed.
The Costa family had the pleasure of sharing their home with several long-lived dogs in the past. Bobi’s mother, Gira, lived to be 18 years old, and another of their dogs, Chicote, enjoyed a remarkable life of 22 years. But Bobi’s story is truly one of a kind, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
Bobi’s global fan base, as demonstrated by the more than 100 people who celebrated his 31st birthday, speaks to the immense affection he garnered throughout his extraordinary life. He was the last of a remarkable lineage of animals within the Costa family. Rest in peace, Bobi, your legacy will continue to inspire dog lovers around the world. 🐾❤️🌈
