Welcome to Helping Dogs & Cats Rescue
We are a non-profit animal rescue that focuses on rehabilitating and rehoming cats and dogs across Hampshire UK and Romania. Our journey began in 2018 when our Founder and Manager, Kirsty Wrightson, established the rescue after losing her beloved dog, Millie.
Who we are
Since then, our team of volunteers and fosterers have worked tirelessly to find all our animals a family of their own. To date, we have rescued and rehomed over 1000 dogs and cats, but there are many more that still need our help.
What we do
Our work is never done. Unfortunately, there are always animals that need our help, both locally and abroad.
We support the local community in and around Basingstoke and the wider area by rehoming and rehabilitating dogs, cats, and other small animals. Our work includes arranging shelter, transport, veterinary care, microchipping, spaying, and neutering.
In addition to our work in the UK, we also help dogs and cats in Romania. The shelters in Romania are often filthy and riddled with disease. We support individual rescuers in Romania, working alone with little support or financial backing, who are making a real difference in the lives of the dogs they save. We help promote the animals they have available to rehome and support them with spay and neuter campaigns.
Help us make a difference
One of our biggest challenges aside from fundraising is finding foster homes. As fast as we can rehome, there are more animals waiting to come in.
Fostering is hugely rewarding and gives an animal the opportunity of finding their forever home in a safe, loving, and secure environment. When you foster a dog or cat with us you play a key part in the rehoming process and help us to help more animals. If you’d like to know more about fostering, you can read more on our fostering page.
Our small team is staffed by volunteers, who are true animal lovers and passionate about animal welfare. We receive no government funding and depend entirely on the generosity of our supporters.
Every penny we receive goes directly to helping dogs and cats. If you would like to donate or are interested in volunteering, we would love to hear from you. Email enquiries@helpingdogsandcatsuk.org
GORGEOUS GIRL HOLLY
Holly was rescued from the street in Romania where she was regularly beaten and chased away by villagers. She had a few puppies who unfortunately died of Parvo – such a sad life. Extremely shy, but desperate for cuddles and love, and always smiling.

OH MY GOODNESS HOLLY! YOU HAVE THE SWEETEST FACE EVER! – HOLLY WHEN SHE WAS ABOUT TO BE RESCUED!
Gorgeous girl Holly was rescued last August in Romania, before finding her forever home in the UK in October. Here she is living her best life I think she looks happy it’s safe to say

CHEEKY BOY LASER
Laser was saved after he was hit by a car on the streets of Romania and left for dead. One of our rescue partners in Romania took him to a local vet where he stayed for almost a week on perfusions, without waking up. Just as he was about to PTS he woke up. Besides his broken bones, he also has nerve damage in his leg and the only option was to amputate it. After much love, care and rehabilitation he went on to find a forever home in the UK.

Laser, the tripod doggie, enjoying summer in the UK He was adopted months ago by his loving family. He’s a very happy dog, quite happy chasing after rabbits, deer and generally roaming the countryside on 3 legs (fortunately he can’t catch them!)

LASER YOU ARE SERIOUSLY CUTE AND WE LOVE HOW HAPPY YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL ZEST FOR LIFE NOW!

ADORABLE PLUTO AND BETTIE
Pluto & Bettie – the rescue was contacted on the 11 July this year by a member of the public who had found two small puppies whilst out walking her own dog in the local woods. We took the puppies to a local vet, where they stayed to receive treatment and check. Betty & Pluto are thought to only be about 10 weeks old – they went into the safe hands of one of our foster carers. It is very rare that puppies are abandoned in the UK.
Bettie has now been adopted and Pluto is currently being promoted with a view to finding his forever home.

PLUTO WE SO HOPE YOU FIND YOUR FABULOUS FOREVER HOME SOON!

CUTIE PIE POPPY
Judie now Poppy (Feb this year) was rescued after being left on a chain and abandoned in a village in Romania. When rescued it was found that they had all been eating stones to survive and that she was carrying dead babies inside of her and was extremely poor.
Today she is loving an amazing life in the UK.
