THERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOUR DOGGY’S THROUGH THE EXCITEMENT OF HALLOWEEN!

We are lucky as JET our Chihuahua loves it when the doorbell rings! His tail wags, he does an excited bark and can’t wait to greet whoever is at the door! He loves children and all the atterntion he gets from them! For others it can be lead to anxiety. Three tips below seem obvious but are invaluable for dogs with anxiety!

Create a safe space

To help your dog feel more secure you should set aside some space where they can lie down and relax. Try placing their bed far from the door and the noise of trick-or-treaters, or in a quiet area of the house. Make sure you check on them regularly and take them out into the garden for pee-breaks where they can avoid the children on the street.

Let your guests know

If you are planning on having a party this year, let your guests know to leave your dog be. People may be excited to see your dog but if the environment isn’t right it can worsen your dog’s fear. Instead, ask guests not to disturb your dog and to avoid the safe space you have created for them.

Exercise before

Taking your dog for a long walk before the children start trick-or-treating will help them settle down later in the evening. Tiring them out could mean they are able to rest easier and they could sleep through the noise. Like with humans, exercise stimulates the production of ‘happy’ hormones in the body which will eliminate some of their nervous energy.
