LHAR – Last Hope Animal Rescue https://www.lasthoperescueuk.com/

We have been sent TRIGGER’S story by his new human Mum Jeminne and she writes ….

Firstly I’ll start with a brief background on myself.  In early 2017 two of my beloved Rhodesian Ridgebacks sadly passed away one after the other in a very short time.  As a family we were devastated.  Two members of our household who had been with us many years taken away.  Our intention was to replace them with ridgeback rescues and provide furry siblings for the ridgeback still with us.

After sometime searching the internet we came across a rescue called Last Hope Animal Rescue.  This is a wonderful rescue that is completely volunteer and home based.  Over the years they have helped hundreds of dogs many having suffered greatly from abuse or neglect and it has been their mission to give them another chance at life and find them the homes they desperately deserve.  They become these dog’s Last Hope.

LHAR had recently taken in an ex breeding bitch, a cross ridgeback. We decided to go and meet Emmie.  Upon arrival we were shocked and appalled by the state she was in.  It was clear to see she had many litters but was only about 3 years old herself.  We decided then and there that she was coming home with us.  When we got her home we hadn’t appreciated how traumatised Emmie was.  She was particularly scared of men but would pee and poop herself if she passed anyone on a walk.  As such we decided to wait at least 6 months before getting another dog, to give her extra time to settle.  2 months later I travelled back to LHAR’s kennels and collected Trigger.

In 2016 Trigger was living in a builders yard connected to a chain outside of a makeshift doghouse.  We understand that he was about 9 years and had been living there most of his life.  The conditions were extremely sad and lonely and heartbreaking for any passerby to see.  It’s hard to imagine being tied to a chain during the cold harsh winters or the hot summers not to mention the days when it does nothing but rain. However Trigger’s life was about to change because one day Lisa Bowes accidentally came across Trigger.  She couldn’t get the sad picture of Trigger on a chain out of her mind and decided to travel back the following day to speak with the owner.  After speaking with the owner it was agreed that if Lisa could find a rescue he would release the dog so that hopefully they could find a home for him to live out his final years.

This pic was taken shortly after Andy released him from the chain. You can see he looks happy!

Lisa set about her next task finding a rescue that would take Trigger on.  However this task was proving harder then she first thought.  With limited spaces available in rescues across the UK it can be difficult to place an older dog especially one from the bully breeds. Having no luck Lisa enlisted the help of a local man Stephen Cowens who immediately shared Trigger’s story on his social media.  Within hours Last Hope Animal Rescue came forward and offered a space for Trigger.

Eventually the day came to release Trigger from his old life and so together Andy Murphy Smith and Lisa went to cut him loose. You can see by the pictures how happy he looks to be finally freed.  Once released an animal transporter working with LHAR collected Trigger and started the journey to the boarding kennels until a forever home could be found.

LHAR broke the news of their latest addition Trigger and as you can imagine the love poured in with so many messages from people hoping he would now find his final resting place but sadly no offer of a home was found.  LHAR later advised me that they were surprised how few offers came forward considering his life on a chain.  The campaign to find Chain Dog continued and Susanna Warren found a new love in her life.

Over the months the rescue and Susanna tirelessly campaigned to find Trigger
a home. I understand Trigger had a brief foster home in Scotland but it didn’t work out as he was too strong for the couple to control.  Once again Trigger travelled back to the kennels.

Whilst we all love a sad story we all want the happy ending of the forever home but after 9 months with LHAR this hadn’t happened and Trigger was getting older.  Then out of the blue Trigger was attacked by the dog in the kennel next to his which had resulted in Trigger needing stitches for his legs and paws. This was very upsetting for all to hear and the campaign was ramped up again to desperately find another foster home for Trigger to recover in.  When I heard the news I decided to travel to the kennels to bring Trigger home.

TRIGGER’S FREEDOM DAY ! ANDY AND LISA LITERALLY CUTTING HIM FREE FROM HIS CHAINS!

Trigger has lived with us for nearly four and half years and we love him dearly. I read somewhere that all dogs have a purpose and that is so true.  Trig’s purpose was to help with the rehabilitation of Emmie.  They are like the characters of Lady and the Tramp.  Every morning the ritual begins…trigger starts off the cleaning of her ears and eyes next he likes to make sure her gnashers stay nice and clean.  In return Em sits with her older man to keep him company.  He absolutely loves her as does she him.

Trigger has been an amazing dog considering his previous life, although not toilet trained he mastered the skill of asking to go out within a few days which was a bonus for my furniture.

He loves loves life especially walking.  In fact he gets quite grumpy when we try to cut the already 90 minute walk.  We call it the Trigger Tantrum.  He literally falls on the floor like a dead animal and refuses to walk.  This can last for hours if we let him.  In the words of The Proclaimers…. ‘and I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more’. That’s our Trigger!

The next love is of course food….Spaghetti Bol with meatballs being his absolute favourite followed by a close second being roast dinner.  He’s not fussed what type of meat as long as there is lots of it with the odd potato or 3.

The next love is the staffie roll, this can be achieved by either going in the garden whilst the sun is shining, lying on your bed or of the course the human bed that has just been made.  Throwing himself onto his back and rolling about kicking his legs in the air.  It’s the Triggy Piggy Shuffle.

THE TRIGGY PIGGY SHUFFLE!

TRIGGER’S SPA – WE PERSONALLY WATCHED THIS VIDEO ABOUT 12 TIMES AS WAS JUST SO LOVELY TO WATCH – THANK YOU TRIGGER!

Next love is the Trigger Spa as we call it. We have a stream not far from where we live and every day he likes to waddle up and get in for a paddle and a splash about then sit for at least 5 mins in the freezing cold water. We do this summer and winter. Our vet feels the cold water will be good for his arthritis.  The sad reality of years on a chain means he is riddled with arthritis.

Lastly Trigger loves people, the last love in his life is for all the people that helped him along his journey, from Lisa and Andy to Stephen to Susanna but also to LHAR that offered him the all important lifeline that resulted in a final forever home being found.

Fabulous rescue by Andy Murphy Smith ( Murphys Army) and Lisa Bowes . With thanks to LHAR Georgette Karpel who fostered trigger for a few weeks and Jeminne Williams who finally gave this boy his loving forever committed home. As they say, the best dogs are Rescue dogs.
