This is the wonderful story of how WINSTON’S WHEELS CHARITY came about !
It all began with a gorgeous doggy called WINSTON (you may have guessed)! This is the legacy that WINSTON left behind after he passed to venture onto his new adventures over the RAINBOW BRIDGE!
WINSTON was Rachel’s cute Staffordshire Bull Terrior. It began when he started to walk in a slightly peculiar way. He firstly visited the vets and they sent him to see a specialist. It was here they discovered that WINSTON had an inoperable tumour on his spine. At this point, Rachel was told that there wasn’t anything they could do about it and it would become progressively worse. They were told that most people at this point would put their dog to sleep!
For Rachel this wasn’t an option! WINSTON was still the same happy boy just without the use of his hind legs. Vet bills are expensive and after exhausting her funds, Rachel was told about Zook The General and Sgt. Buster who run a fabulous Facebook page! Zook’s human Dad who runs the page very kindly loaned WINSTON a wheelchair.
This was the moment everything changed!!! A complete stranger had helped! WINSTON took to his wheelchair straight away. He carried on doing everything as before but just with the help of his new wheels! (Way to go WINSTON!).
Wheels not stopping him, WINSTON carried on paddling in the river and playing with the dogs he met on all his walks! Nothing held him back!
A friend of Rachel’s on facebook (whom she had never actually met) set up a ‘go fund me’ page without Rachel knowing anything about it and suddenly and surprising presented WINSTON with his own wheelchair after raising the necessary funds! Rachel can never thank these two strangers enough who went above and beyond to help them!
It opened Rachel’s eyes to an understanding that when dog lovers all pull together, they can make wonderful things happen!
This was the insight and beginning of WINSTON’S WHEELS CHARITY. The charity is to help more people and their dogs in similar situations, where funding is desperate. This was back in April 2018, so the charity will be celebrating three years this coming April.
Rachel has the help of four fantastic ladies who help keep the charity running smoothly. It is not a one man job and their wonderful support has enabled the charity to thrive.
So far WINSTON’S WHEELS CHARITY has helped a massive 285 dogs!!! They currently have a total of 88 wheelchairs out with dogs and 47 strollers.
The wheelchairs and strollers are loaned free of charge and the only thing asked for in return are updates of the doggy’s and support with fun raffles etc.
Lots of the wheelchairs are on the 4th dogs now and so not only help one dog but many more!
The very handsome and incredible WINSTON sadly passed last June. However this has just created more ambitiion in Rachel to help others. The wheelchair that WINSTON had gave him his 3 wonderful wheelchair years. This in itself has changed so many people’s minds about dogs with disabilities.
With help from complete strangers, WINSTON’S WHEELS CHARITY have raised £28,000 which has been spent on life changing wheelchairs. So many dogs are now enjoying their lives fully again.
WINSTON your legacy will go on you wonderful, fabulous Boy!
